Outing is an Austrian documentary film that follows the life of a pedophile man over four years. Sebastian Meise and Thomas Reider developed the concept while researching their award-winning film Still Life .

content

The documentary portrays the young archaeologist Sven, who has known since puberty that he is sexually attracted to children. Sven speaks openly about his pedophile inclination and his goal of never putting it into practice. The film accompanies its protagonist for four years, shows his inner struggle and raises questions about moral boundaries, about the place people like Sven can have in society.

Reviews

"It's seldom so rigid with silence in the cinema."

"The tension in the film arises because Meise and his co-director Thomas Reider constantly have to readjust the limits of what can be represented."

- Dominik Kamalzadeh, Isabella Reicher : The standard

“Filmmakers Sebastian Meise and Thomas Reider spend years observing Sven as he sets boundaries for himself and struggles with this most taboo sexual disorder. His very public confession in this film and his genuine attempts to seek professional help enable us to better understand these very complex desires. "

- Chris McDonald : Hot Dogs

“Whatever you think of the guy, it's hard not to sympathize with him - the roots of his longings seem very deep, and he wants so badly not to be who he is. Wisely, Meise and Reider keep their feelings to themselves, letting Sven tell his story without judgment. "

- Scott MacDonald : Toronto Standard

"The documentary 'Outing' is an astonishingly open and at the same time oppressive insight into the world of thought of a 'ticking time bomb'."

- Susanne Lintl : Courier

“Like all relevant documentaries, 'Outing' brings up a whole host of new ones for each question it answers. Some of them affect us fundamentally, for example our attitude towards potential perpetrators: How much freedom do we actually allow thoughts? And how does the knowledge of an inclination change our relationship with a person? "

- Michael Sennhauser

“Meise and Reider are careful to handle their controversial and disturbingly personable subject with an even hand. In fact, save for one interview, the narrative avoids vilification, having a natural trajectory of its own to fuel the template of documentary horror. "

- Robert Bell : Exclaim

“I highly recommend seeing this film if you ever have the chance. (...) Young Sven is one of the bravest people I've ever seen, and the very act of putting himself out there so completely - of documenting something so overwhelming to him for such a long period of time - all serves to make even complete strangers in a theater halfway around the globe genuinely care about what happens to him from here. "

- Ryan Goldhar : Mindreels
