Ove Thorsheim

Ove Thorsheim (born May 30, 1949 in Norway ) is a Norwegian diplomat . He has been the Norwegian ambassador to Portugal since 2011 .

Life

Ove Thorsheim worked as a seaman in international shipping. He studied French history at the University of Bergen and graduated in 1976 with a master's degree. After graduating, he worked on a drilling platform in the North Sea .

Ove Thorsheim is married and has two sons.

Diplomatic career

From 1977 to 2000 Ove Thorsheim worked for the Norwegian Foreign Ministry in various positions, both in Oslo and in foreign appointments to South Africa (Vice Consul at the Consulate in Cape Town from 1981 to 1984), Switzerland (Embassy Secretary at the Norwegian Permanent Mission at the office of the United Nations in Geneva from 1984 to 1986) and France .

His first assignment as an ambassador was from 2000 to 2005 as an ambassador to Australia . As the Norwegian Ambassador to Australia, he was also accredited for the Cook Islands , Fiji , Papua New Guinea (since October 2002), New Zealand and Tonga . During the refugee situation in 2001, which caused a crisis in relations between Norway and Australia, Thorsheim visited the involved ship Tampa , which was denied docking on Australian territory because it had taken in Hazara refugees in distress.

He moved from Australia to South Africa as ambassador. There he was also accredited for Botswana , Lesotho and Namibia . From 2007 to 2011 he was Director General and Chief of Protocol in the Department of Culture, Diplomacy and Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Oslo. Since October 2011 he has succeeded Inga Magistad as Norway’s Ambassador in Lisbon , and in May 2012 he was co-accredited for Cape Verde . As ambassador to Portugal, he is also responsible for Guinea-Bissau .
