Johannes Friedrich Böckelmann
Johannes Friedrich Böckelmann (also Bockelmann ; pseudonym Hircander ; born April 22, 1633 in Steinfurt , † October 23, 1681 in Leiden ) was a German legal scholar.
Life
The son of the district judge Friedrich Böckelmann attended the grammar school in his hometown from 1651 to 1654 . Here he had already been able to develop his legal talent under Werner Pagenstecher (1609–1668). On February 5, 1656 he enrolled at the University of Heidelberg , where he participated in the training of lawyers during his studies. On March 22nd, 1659 he was appointed professor of the institutes by rescript of the Palatinate Elector Karl Ludwig , which he accepted on April 26th and took his oath on May 4th in the Senate of the university.
In the course of a month, in March 1659, in the presence of the elector, he defended his dissertation Disputatio exhibens diversa iuris thematha , with Ezechiel Spanheim appearing as an opponent. He received his doctorate in law, took over the professorship of the Pandects in 1661 and was appointed the first professor of the law faculty in 1665. In his function as professor, he participated in the organizational tasks of the Heidelberg University and was Rector of the Alma Mater from December 20, 1660 to December 23, 1661 .
With his academic advancement, he became an assessor at the Palatinate court and in 1664 its vice-president. At the same time he was from 1661 councilor and 1665 envoy of the elector for diplomatic tasks. In 1670 he accepted a call to the University of Leiden , where he took over the chair of Roman law on November 8, 1671 and the professorship of constitutional and international law on July 3, 1671. Here, too, he participated in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1675/76 . His testamentary foundation still exists today at the University of Leiden, which enables a law student to receive a scholarship.
In literary terms, he distinguished himself as the author of his institute compendium. Above all, however, he made an appearance with his didactically simplified teaching method of law studies. The simplifying reforms of the legal teaching system that he introduced caused a sensation. He relied on the compendia of that time, which later became a recognized teaching method that many European universities imitated.
