Pál Vásárhelyi (born March 25, 1795 in Szepesolaszi , today Spišské Vlachy , Slovakia , † April 8, 1846 Pest ) was a Hungarian hydraulic engineer .

Live and act

Vásárhelyi studied at the Institutum Geometrico-Hydrotechnicum in Budapest , where he obtained his diploma in 1816. For a few years he worked as a hydraulic engineering technician on the rivers Theiss and Körös until he was mainly involved in regulating the Danube . It was also the task to precisely measure the Danube . In the course of this he published the two works Introductio in praxim triangulationis and the resolution of some important tasks as a contribution to geometric triangulation .

In 1829 he was in charge of surveying the Lower Danube. In 1833 and 1834 he accompanied István Széchenyi on a study trip to Great Britain. Then he was involved in the regulation and drainage of the Danube, which led to the greatest changes in the Danube in the 19th century and laid the basis for making the Danube navigable to the Black Sea between 1834 and 1896 .

In 1843 one of his most important works was published, Esetmérési Térképe Magyarországnak ... az Adriatenger víztükrére alkalmazva , in which the height information along the Danube and its tributaries are shown as the height above the Adriatic Sea . For this purpose, he also used the data of János Lipszky , who initially mapped many places in Hungary, as a basis .

In the early 1840s he was also commissioned to regulate and protect the upper Tisza from flooding. This was completed in 1845. In these years and in the following years up to 1880, the Tisza, which had many turns, was shortened to 40% of its original length.

Vásárhelyi was a corresponding member from 1833 and full member from 1840 of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences .
