The 4th European Pétanque Championship for Espoirs took place from October 19-20, 2013 in the Düsseldorf boules hall of the "sur place" association in parallel women and men competitions. Eight teams played in two groups of four.

mode

In contrast to the world and European championships for men, women or juniors, the European championship for espoirs is not only held in triplets with the option of substitution. Instead, the first round of triplets is followed by a double and a tête à tête at the same time , without the possibility of changing.

Every victory is awarded one point. Thus, the overall game wins the team that can win at least two of the three games.

A preliminary round is played in groups of four (everyone against everyone). The first and second in each group reach the semi-finals, which are played crosswise (A1 - B2 and B1 - A2). There is no game for third place.

Unlike the last European Championship in 2011 , this time the preliminary round groups will be drawn on the evening before the start of the tournament. There are no setting rights.

Men's

The defending champion is France, which was pre-qualified alongside hosts Germany. Other teams had to go to a qualifying round.

qualification

To determine the six free starting places, three qualification tournaments took place in the run-up to the European Championship, each of which was attended by 6 teams. The first two teams in each qualification group qualified for the European Championship.

Surprisingly, Monaco, runner-up in 2011, did not register for qualification.

Group A

In qualification group A, the hosts Finland, Norway, Sweden, Spain and Turkey were originally supposed to play for the starting places for the European Championship in Luxembourg. However, Norway canceled their participation, so that five teams played off the two places.

In addition to the favored Spaniards, the hosts also prevailed through the direct comparison won against Finland and qualified for an EM for the first time since 2008.

Group C

Qualification group C was held in Denmark. In addition to the host, England, Austria, Switzerland, Slovakia and Hungary also competed.

Here, too, the favored teams prevailed. In addition to the host, Switzerland has also secured a ticket to the finals and will thus take part in a European Championship for the second time.

Due to the direct comparison between the teams with two wins, England is third, Slovakia fourth and Austria fifth.

On Friday, October 18, 2013, the preliminary round groups were drawn. The following groups came into being:

Germany had a very difficult preliminary group with defending champion France, who competed with Dylan Rocher and Kevin Malbec, who had been European champions the week before, among others , Italy and Spain.

The other group is made up of Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg and Switzerland.

The preliminary round will take place on Saturday, October 19th.

Group A

Germany played as hosts in Group A against defending champions France, Italy and Spain.

Thus three medal winners from the last European Championship met in the preliminary round.

As expected, France was the first to prevail. Spain and Italy delivered a real thriller about the semi-finals in the last group game, which the Italians won after losing a triplet.

Without a single victory, Germany was left behind in last place.

Group B

In Group B there was no clear favorite. Apart from Denmark, no other nation was at the last European Championship.

Belgium won all the games here and made it to the semi-finals first. After an opening defeat, Denmark also won the two duels against Luxembourg and Switzerland and thus had the first men's medal at an Espoir European Championship.

Switzerland and Luxembourg were eliminated. For the Swiss, three games won were not enough for an overall victory.

Final round

The final round with the semi-finals and the final will take place entirely on October 20, 2011.

In the semifinals, the group first played against the group runner-up of the other group.

France and Italy both clearly won their games 3-0 to reach the final.

For Belgium and Denmark it stayed with bronze.

In the final Italy led 1-0 after the triplet. But two clear victories in the second round brought the French team the fourth title at the fourth European Championship.

Group B

Group B was played in Spain. The hosts received Denmark, England, the Netherlands and Austria.

Spain won every game and easily qualified for the European Championship. The second safe place on the grid, however, was hard fought. Due to the direct comparison, England placed ahead of Denmark, which only lost due to a 12-13 defeat in Tête-a-tête.

The Netherlands, who even had two 12-13 results in decisive games against each other, also failed very closely.

Austria, who finished seventh at the European Championships in 2011, remained the penultimate place in the table, as they won the direct comparison against the Netherlands.

As expected, France prevailed as first group with 4 wins. Three teams landed behind with two wins each. Due to the direct comparison with each other, Slovenia finished second, Switzerland third and Sweden failed to qualify in fourth.

Switzerland bought the ticket to the EM due to the better cross-comparison with the third in Group B, Denmark. Seven games were won against five of the Danes.

So all of Roskilde's medal winners played in one group.

France was the first to prevail with three wins. Spain also reached the semi-finals in second place.

For the defending champions there was only one win in the first triplet against Belgium. However, like the men, they finished the preliminary round without a win as the last.
