Péter Sajó

Péter Sajó (* 1961 in Szekszárd ; † April 12, 1999 there ) was a Hungarian cyclist and national champion in cycling .

Athletic career

At the age of 14 he started cycling, he became a member of the Szekszardi Spartacus club , for which he rode his entire career. He won nine national championship titles during his playing days. He was Hungarian champion in the team time trial in 1979, 1980 and 1983 to 1985. In road racing he won the championship race in 1984 and 1987. In 1986 he became a time trial champion and also won the hill climb championship. He has been on the podium several times at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Gemenc , the best international cycling race in Hungary. In 1982 he was close to overall victory when the chain of his bike broke on the last stage and he lost the victory to the Czechoslovakian Pavel Galik . In 1983 he finished third behind Zoltán Halász and won the mountain time trial.

In his honor, the first stage of the race was renamed Péter Sajó Memorial . For the Hungarian national team he competed several times in country tours such as the GDR tour , the Austria tour, etc. He competed four times in the international peace tour , the 57th place in 1983 was his best result.
