Pöyry, which now operates under the new name AFRY after the merger with ÅF , was a Finnish service company with worldwide operations . Pöyry offered strategic, technical and organizational advice , planning , engineering , project management and operational support for various branches of industry.

It is named after the Finnish industrialist Jaakko Pöyry , who founded the company in 1958. The global headquarters are in the Finnish city of Vantaa in the Helsinki region ; in addition, Pöyry has permanent branches in around 20 other countries. Pöyry employs around 5,500 people worldwide. In 2013 the company, which generated at the Helsinki Stock Exchange ( OMX ) under the symbol POY1V listed is a turnover of 650 million euros.

On December 10, 2018, Pöyry and the Swedish ÅF announced that they would merge to form a leading European company for engineering and consulting services. The company has been operating under the new common brand name AFRY since November 29, 2019.

history

The company was founded in 1958 by Jaakko Pöyry Veikko Emanuel (1924-2006) to the technical basis for planning a sulphate - pulp mill in Äänekoski create. In the following years Jaakko Pöyry Oyj grew into a renowned planner for the forest, pulp and paper industries in Finland, Sweden and other Nordic countries.

Over time, Pöyry expanded his fields of activity to other branches of industry and continents, with the focus on the raw materials , basic supply and infrastructure industries . Key steps in this expansion were the takeover of Soil & Water and Ekono Energy in 1993 and the technical planning of Elektrowatt at the end of the 1990s.

Since the turn of the millennium in particular, Pöyry has further increased its competence and international presence through the acquisition of numerous smaller planning offices in all parts of the world and is now represented in around 50 countries. In Germany, Pöyry employs 700 people, the headquarters are in Mannheim .

In 2006 Jaakko Pöyry Oyj changed its name and has been called Pöyry Oyj ever since .
