PVC was founded in 1977 as one of the first German punk bands in West Berlin . With their title Wall City Rock they coined the genre name for Berlin rock and punk music of the late 1970s. After several line-up changes and dissolutions, they played as a power trio until their last concert on March 10, 2012. The only permanent member of the band was Gerrit Meijer (* 1947 in Berlin; † February 17, 2017 there).

history

The musicians Jürgen Dobroszcsyk, Raymond Ebert, Gerrit Meijer and Knut Schaller met on February 25, 1977 during the concert of The Vibrators in the Kant-Kino in Berlin and started their band project on March 10, 1977. PVC quickly became known in Berlin in the course of 1977, so they were given the opportunity to do a one-hour broadcast with Barry Graves on the Berlin radio station RIAS on August 20, under the title A Touch of Punk . On September 8th they played as the opening act for Vibrators, on September 12th for Iggy Pop . The famous picture of the musicians on the Berlin Wall was also created at this time . The main venue in the following year was the punk house on Lehniner Platz ; From the summer of 1978 PVC played there regularly on Wednesdays. For the opening of SO36 in Berlin-Kreuzberg on 12./13. August 1978 with the two-day wall construction festival (in ironic commemoration of the construction of the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961) PVC performed with other Berlin and West German bands. In addition to Wall City Rock , the title Berlin By Night was one of their musical identifiers. From 1979 onwards there were several changes in the line-up; After various musical experiments, PVC dissolved in 1984 due to artistic stagnation.

In 1988 PVC was founded again in the original line-up; they performed in the Berlin music clubs Quartier Latin and Quasimodo . 1989 PVC took together with Bela B. a single on. After Knut Schaller and Jürgen Dobroszcsyk, who were replaced by Piers Headley and Derek Ballard, due to illness, PVC dissolved for the second time in 1991.

In 2005 founding member Gerrit Meijer (guitar and vocals) with Tom Petersen (drums), founding member of Marquee Moon , and Stefan Schneider (bass) formed the band Gerrit and the R'n'R Stalinists in a classic triple formation. In April 2006 the group renamed itself PVC after it was announced at a gig in Greifswald. In 2007 musician and producer Rob Raw replaced Stefan Schneider on bass.

In 2010 Rob Raw and Tom Petersen left the band for different reasons. Uncle naie , bassist of Fro-Tee Slips , who moved from Flensburg to Berlin , came into contact with the band through mutual contacts and after months of searching for drummers - earlier PVC drummers also played - the three-man line-up with Daniel Ahl ( Bite the Bullet ) was active again until her last concert on March 10, 2012 at Wild At Heart in Kreuzberg.

Musical concept

The founders of PVC received influences from bands like The Damned , the Ramones and The Vibrators . The PVC guitarist Gerrit Meijer writes: “In February 1976 while reading the New Musical Express I came across an article about the New York scene ... The Ramones were also mentioned, and their concept seemed to me to be one of the most obscure of I'd ever heard: two-minute songs, no solos, 20 minute gigs. The concept element "no solos" was very much in keeping with my own craftsmanship, and so - encouraged by these new aspects - I immediately started my first attempts at composition. "

PVC defined itself in the musical spectrum between new-wave-melodic ( “Berlin By Night” ) and typical punk staccato ( “Wall City Rock” ). Up until the 1990s they saw themselves as a classic punk band, where musical performance was more important than the lyrics. Gerrit Meijer: “During the year (1990, author's note) we made a lot of guest appearances in the so-called 'new federal states', where we experienced quite a few strange things: people sitting cross-legged in front of the stage at a punk concert and Desperately trying to hear the lyrics out, we didn't know that. Often times, the audience also seemed to have problems 'correctly classifying' PVC. On a hint that you could understand the lyrics better if the band would play quieter, I replied that PVC doesn't have a special 'message' anyway, so it wouldn't matter whether you hear the lyrics or not. "

PVC in Chocolate Berlin (October 16, 2009)

PVC does not currently feel trapped in the past of punk: “... PVC does not see itself as a service provider for stuck 77 punk veterans. Looking ahead without taboos, between all stools, we are constantly developing. The creative, who presents himself to the public, always stands with one foot on a banana peel ... let it be drunk! The route is the goal...."

It turns out that this musical concept works; in concerts the “punk veterans” are in the minority. New original compositions with rockabilly and a cappella pieces alternate in quick succession. The classics are also turned upside down - “Wall City Rock” invites you to sing along and “Berlin By Night” comes with pounding accompaniment and cutting guitar sounds.
