The Pacolet is formed by the confluence of its short southern and northern tributaries:
- The North Pacolet River rises in the Blue Ridge Mountains in southeast Henderson County in North Carolina and flows east into Polk County . There the river is dammed and forms the Lake Summit , then it passes the town of Tryon and turns to the southeast in the north of Spartanburg County .
- The South Pacolet River rises in the northeast of Greenville County and flows eastward to the north of Spartanburg County, there it passes the village of Campobello and is dammed to William C. Bowen Lake.
These two rivers flow together 16 kilometers north-northeast of the town of Spartanburg , the resulting Pacolet River flows to the southeast, along the borders of the counties Spartanburg, Cherokee and Union , through Lake Blalock and past the small town of Central Pacolet . It flows into the Broad River six kilometers north of the town of Lockhart on the common border of the counties Cherokee and Union.
In Spartanburg County, the Pacolet River takes on the Lawsons Fork Creek , which is historically referred to as the "Lawsons Fork of the Pacolet River". The creek flows along its entire length in Spartanburg County and passes through the city of Spartanburg.
