Pavle "Paja" Jovanović ( Serbian : Павле "Паја" Јовановић; born June 4 . Jul / 16th June  1859 . Greg in Vrsac , then Austria-Hungary , now Serbia ; † thirtieth November 1957 in Vienna ) was a Serbian Austrian painter of realism .

Life

At the age of 15, Paja Jovanović moved to Vienna with his father. Here he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts with Christian Griepenkerl and Leopold Carl Müller and, apart from a few holiday trips to the Balkans, later also to the Caucasus, North Africa, Italy and Spain spent most of his life. From 1895 on, Jovanović mostly painted historical subjects. After 1905 he only made portraits of wealthy European clients, including Mihailo Pupin . In 1888 he was appointed a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts .

Awards

For his painting "Wounded Montenegrin" shown at the annual exhibition of the Academy in Vienna in 1883 , he received first prize and an imperial scholarship.
