The Ascension Cathedral (popular Serbian Orthodox Cathedral , Romanian : Catedrala episcopală ortodoxa Sarba , Serbian - Cyrillic Српска Саборна црква Вазнесења Господњег ) is located on the Unirii Square of the Romanian city of Timisoara and is the cathedral of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy Temisvar . The main entrance of the church points to the parallel street, Strada Emanoil Ungureanu No. 14 .

The listed building, located in the 1st district of Cetate , is one of the three Serbian Orthodox churches in the city , together with the Georgskirche in the 2nd district of Fabric ( German factory town ) and the Nicolaikirche at Piața Avram Iancu in the 5th district of Mehala .

Right next to the church is the richly decorated Serbian Orthodox Bishop's Home , also known as the Serbian Orthodox Vicariate , which was built in the Baroque style between 1745 and 1747 .

history

In 1737, (according to other sources 1728) at the time of the plague in the city, the original Serbian Orthodox cathedral burned down at this location. The now existing church was built between 1744 and 1748 in the baroque style by order of the Orthodox (Serbian) Bishop Georgie Popowitsch. In order to gain space for the larger church, a Turkish wall that had existed since the 16th century was razed in 1742. In 1791 the church was expanded to include the two church towers. The classicist facade with baroque elements facing Ungureanu Street is striking.

At first the church was equipped with a small iconostasis under the guidance of the painter Tenețki . After their sale, Mihailo Ianici carved a new iconostasis out of wood between 1833 and 1836 and fitted it with six icons that were painted by Constantin Daniel between 1838 and 1843. Alexander Tepferer gilded the wood carvings in 1839.

The outer wall facing Cathedral Square was built in 1822, while the wrought iron gate to Ungureanu Street was built in 1886. The Pantocrator and the Four Evangelists were created in 1903 as the work of the painter Stevan Alexici . The ornaments of the church were designed by Joseph Habinger . From 1993 to 1997 the church was renovated with Serbian support from the Vojvodina Institute from Novi Sad .

Seven bishops are buried in the church , and some dignitaries who donated their property to the church also rest in the nave . Until 1864, the cathedral was visited by all Orthodox believers in the city. Romanian Orthodox and Serbian Orthodox believers are equally welcome to worship in the Church today .

In 1964 the church was added to the list of cultural monuments.
