The Palais de Justice is a listed courthouse ( tribunal de grande instance ) in Strasbourg's new town . It was inaugurated in 1897 in what was then the German city as a palace of justice . The palace has been classified as a monument historique since 1992 .

history

The Palais de Justice was built by the architect Skjøld Neckelmann from 1894 to 1897 in the immediate vicinity of the Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune catholique church, which Neckelmann built with August Hartel from 1889 to 1893 . In striking contrast to the red Vosges - sandstone , the architect used gray for the Palace of Justice of the Church Pfalzburger sandstone. Outwardly in neo-renaissance style, the inside of the palace shows stylistic features of neo-Egyptian historicism , most noticeably in the atrium , which is decorated with sphinxes and cartouche-like reliefs .

During the Second World War, there was an air raid shelter below the building .

In 1978 the architect Roger Lamoise added heights to the sides.

In 1997 a first report was drawn up which called for a complete renovation of the palace. From 2002 to 2012, several projects were presented, some of which met with fierce resistance from monument conservationists as well as judges and lawyers. From June 2014 to December 2016, the building was finally repaired under the direction of the Spanish architect Jordi Garcés .
