The Palais des Enffans d'Avernas is a former Graz city palace in the Inner City district . It's on the corner of the Glockenspielplatz and Enge Gasse .

history

There was probably a house owned by Baron Georg Ruprecht von Herberstein at its current location in 1596 . The purchase of four more houses from the neighborhood is secured in 1674 by the Herberstein family, who then had the palace built and the existing structure included. In 1728 the city palace became the property of the Counts of Schrattenbach and was mentioned in the city books as "Schrattenbachisches Haus". After the Schrattenbach family went bankrupt, it was acquired by Dismas von Ramschissl in 1787.

After him, the owners changed frequently until it was acquired in 1840 by the Count des Enffans D'Avernas, the offspring of an old French noble family. The palace is named after him. The count had the building added. In 1828 the palace was the first office building to be adapted for the mutual fire damage insurance company. After moving to the Reinerhof in 1876, the Palais des Enffans d'Avernas was re-let.

Architecture and design

The late Renaissance building was built in the 16th century, which was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century and increased in size around 1840. It has a large four-storey structure with several inner courtyards. The facade dates from the time of construction around 1700. The third floor is clearly visible. At the corner of the Glockenspielplatz and Enge Gasse a polygonal corner oriel protrudes onto the square. After the installation of various shops in the 20th century, the corner curbstone and a stone frame window in Abraham-a-Sancta Clara-Gasse and the portal frame of the courtyard entrance have been preserved. Two sandstone lions (around 1840) are attached above the gate, flanking a now empty inscription panel.

The large inner courtyard is divided into two parts by a staircase with four-storey pillar arcades . Upstairs are located in the Stieg plant three openings in Rundbogenstil with balustrades. The staircase is one of the most important staircases in Styria from the 17th century and probably has Italian models. In 1853, Carl Aichinger built an annex that served as a horse stable. The original furnishings of the palace interiors have not been preserved.
