The Palais Thinnfeld (also Thienfeld or Thinfeld ) is a former Graz city palace on the corner of Mariahilferstraße and Südtiroler Platz in the fourth district of Lend . It is directly connected to the Grazer Kunsthaus .

history

In the place of today's palace there were two houses that were in bourgeois ownership and were considered the most highly taxed houses in the old Murvorstadt. Johann Adam Thien, an iron merchant, had two wings on the Mur side built in 1701 . Around 1740 the building was extended and renewed. Under Balthasar Thi (e) n (n) von Thinnfeld, Adam Thien's son, the old building was demolished and the new main wing was built in its place according to the plans of the architect Anton Erhard Martinelli . The construction of the palace, which was completed in 1742, was carried out by the master builder Johann Georg Stengg . In 1820 the Palais Thinnfeld became the property of the master Purgleitner, a leather manufacturer.

Curbstone

After 1838, the building was owned by the Graz ophthalmologist Johann Stieger and other bourgeois owners. The Iron House was added from 1848 to 1850 . After 1910, the Lechner company acquired the palace and used the premises as a department store from 1955. The Iron House was converted into the Kunsthaus Graz at the beginning of the 21st century . The City of Graz acquired Palais Thinnfeld, had it renovated in 2007 and has been using the rooms as office and exhibition space ever since.

Architecture and design

The late baroque building has two storeys and a hipped attic roof from which seven roof houses with triangular gables protrude. The basket arch stone portal is provided with a wrought iron skylight grille with tendril motifs and two stone vases. The entrance has a square vault with side yokes. The upper floor of the Palais Thinnfeld is adorned with four stucco ceilings in the bandel , foliage and latticework style and with reliefs of city views that date from the construction period and were created by various artists. The tiled stove in the corner hall comes from Hafner Emeran Grueber and was designed by the architect of the palace, Anton Martinelli . Almost all rooms are equipped with wood paneling made by Johann Michael Weindl. At the corner of the house there is a curbstone with a wrought iron helmet.
