Palazzo Dandolo , now the old part of the Hotel Danieli , is a palace in Venice in the Italian region of Veneto . It is located in the Sestiere Castello on Riva degli Schiavoni near St. Mark's Square , between the Hotel Excelsior and the modern part of the Hotel Danieli .

history

The palace was built by the Dandolo family in the 14th century. Later ownership of the property was divided between the family's daughters. In 1536 the Gritti family bought part of the palace. Then it fell to the Bernardis , the Mocenigos and the Nanis . Several receptions took place in this palace. In 1530 the election of the King of Bohemia and Hungary as King of the Romans was celebrated there and in 1629 the wedding reception of Giustiniana Mocenigo (member of the palace's family owners) and Lorenzo Giustinian took place in this palace . On this occasion the musical drama Proserpina rapita by Giulio Strozzi was performed. In 1822 Giuseppe dal Niel , known as "Danieli", bought the building and had it converted into a hotel. Then a thorough restoration was carried out, in which the interiors were changed in a neo-Gothic style . These conversions were planned by the architect Tranquillo Orsi .

description

facade

The facade of the palace is clearly Gothic , which you can see on the window frames in Istrian limestone , the expressiveness of which is concentrated in the six-fold window on the first main floor. Above it sit seven gothic flower patterns, five quatrains and two half quatrains. This window is flanked by two pairs of single windows that are decorated with tripods . In the middle of the second main floor there is an eight-fold window, which is particularly unusual due to its unusually fast rhythm. On the ground floor there is a simple portal made of Istrian limestone.

inside rooms

The interiors, which were renovated in a neo-Gothic style, show numerous echoes of the Middle Ages. The central element of the house is the large inner courtyard, dominated by a golden staircase and galleries decorated with Moorish arches and small, oriental columns. This restoration is an example of the fascination of international tourists with the decadent face of Venice. In the rooms there are works of art, antique furniture and lamps from Murano .

Hotel Danieli

Many well-known personalities have stayed at the Hotel Danieli, including Goethe , Alfred de Musset , Marcel Proust , Honoré de Balzac , Wagner , Jean Cocteau , John Ruskin , Claude Debussy , George Sand , Charles Dickens , Eugenio Montale , Percy Shelley . George Sand and Alfred de Musset stayed at this hotel as lovers, but their relationship was one of mutual betrayal. Many rulers and crowned heads of Europe have stayed at this hotel. In 1948 a new hotel building was added to the left of the main building. However, this was met with bitter polemics, since the Doge Vitale Michiel II had died here and in 1172, the year of the murder, no more buildings were allowed to be built that were higher than one floor.
