FESPACO
FESPACO is the French abbreviation for Festival panafricain du cinéma et de la télévision de Ouagadougou , the pan-African film and television festival that takes place as a biennial in Ouagadougou , the capital of the West African state of Burkina Faso .
The film festival first took place in 1969, then as the Premier Festival de Cinéma Africain de Ouagadougou and not as the Semaine du cinéma africain , as is often claimed. The then treasurer and founding member of FESPACO made this clear in his book, as proof you can find the poster of the festival in the book. The name was changed to FESPACO in 1972. The festival has been held as a biennale since 1979 and since 1983 the film material fair MICA (Marché international du cinéma et de la télévision africains) has been organized as part of the festival. In 1983, the national culture week La Semaine Nationale de la culture (SNC), which also takes place every two years, alternates with the film festivalBobo-Dioulasso introduced.
The best film has been awarded the Étalon de Yennenga (German "Stallion of Yennenga") since 1972.
The festival is supported by the government of Burkina Faso as well as Denmark , Finland , France , Germany , the Netherlands , Sweden , the People's Republic of China and others.
