description

Vegetative characteristics

Pantacantha ameghinoi is a 50 to 60 (rarely up to 100) cm high shrub that occasionally grows supported by neighboring plants. It is covered with many non-glandular and glandular trichomes ; the non-glandular trichomes are simple or branched with a wrinkled surface, the glandular trichomes have single-cell or multicellular heads. The phellogen is pericyclic , this pericyclic is criss-crossed with strong, woody fibers.

The leaves are sessile and are surrounded by a leaf sheath, the leaf blade is 14 to 30 × 1 to 2 mm long, they are linear-awl-shaped to narrow-elliptical in shape. In the cross-section, woody fibers enveloping the veins can be seen.

blossoms

The flowers are supported by two bracts , which are similar to the leaves, the flower stalks are hardly recognizable or up to 2 mm long. The zygomorphic calyx is five-part, (8) 12 to 15 mm long. The lower, cup-shaped, fused part is comparatively short, the free-standing, about three times longer (i.e. four times as long) calyx tips are rigid and linear-awl-shaped to spike-like. The greenish-yellow to yellow crown is (9.5) 14 to 16 (19) mm long, cylindrical or slightly funnel-shaped, occasionally also slightly urn-shaped. A crown hem or a crown fold is not formed. The five triangular calyx lobes are about 1.5 to 2.5 mm long.

The five stamens protrude slightly over the crown, the stamens are attached to the crown a little below the center and are about the same length. They are also three to four times longer (four to five times as long as) than the approximately (1.5) 1.8 to 2.3 mm long anthers .

The ovary has about 20 ovules per chamber Nektarien are annular, enclosed in the ovary and eye-catching position. The scar is disc-shaped, indented and slightly bilobed.

Fruits and seeds

The fruits are woody capsules 4 to 6 mm long, which are enclosed by the non-enlarging calyx. Each fruit contains (rarely only one) two or three seeds that are angular, almost kidney-shaped and irregularly shaped and have a size of (1.5) 1.8 to 2.2 × 0.7 to 1.5 mm. The seed surface consists of four curved ribs, the outer ones of which are strongly winged.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence

The only species of the genus Pantacantha grows in arid areas of western Argentina and Patagonia at altitudes of 1,700 to 2,400 m.
