location

The nature reserve is located in the Britten district of the Losheim am See community . It extends west of Bergen and north of the Girtenmühle estate about 1.3 km in a westerly direction to the federal highway 268 . In the north it extends to the state border with Rhineland-Palatinate . The area is traversed by the Panzbach and its tributary Puhlwiesbach.

meaning

The 98  hectare area, which was placed under nature protection in 2011 , replaces the former “Panzbachtal” nature reserve, which it completely encloses and increases by 29 hectares. The protective purpose of the nature reserve Panzbachtal west of Bergen is the preservation, development and restoration of the alluvial forests and nebula grass in the Panzbachtal as well as the lean flatland hay meadows , transitional and swinging grass bogs and the beech forest .

This is primarily intended to protect the habitats of the animal species resident there, such as the great fire butterfly , brook lamprey , bullhead and red-backed shrike.
