Paolo Barlera (born September 8, 1982 in Monrovia , Liberia , † December 17, 2009 in Bologna ) was an Italian basketball player. With a height of 2.16 m he was used in the position of the center .

Barlera was considered the greatest Italian talent of his generation in the center position. At the U18 European Championship in 2000, he led the Italian national team to the semi-finals as their best scorer and rebounder . However, in November of that year he was diagnosed with leukemia . In the 2001/2002 season, however, he regularly played short appearances for Virtus Bologna in Serie A and the Euroleague . On June 14, 2002, in a friendly against Greece , Barlera was the first time in the squad of the senior team . He then moved to Progresso Castelmaggiore in the second Italian division and received more playing time in the following season. After the insolvent Virtus Bologna had taken over the license from Progresso Castelmaggiore in 2003, Barlera played a few more games for the club now called FuturVirtus. Although he had now established a regular place in the starting line-up, a serious setback in the fight against his illness soon followed. In 2006 he returned and played for Angelico Biella in Serie A for two years , and in 2007 he was used in several friendly matches for the national team. Then he was in the squad of Virtus Bologna for a year, but without playing a league game. On December 17, 2009, he finally succumbed to his leukemia.
