Papa's Got a Brand New Bag is a song by James Brown . It is considered to be one of the first - if not the first - songs of funk .

Papa's Got a Brand New Bag was recorded at Arthur Smith Studios (Charlotte, North Carolina, USA) in February 1965 during a stop on the way to a gig . The recording of the almost seven minutes long original version took less than an hour. The song was written and produced by James Brown and recorded by the James Brown Band:

Papa's Got a Brand New Bag was first released in July 1965 by the King label. For this, the original version was first accelerated and then split in two: on the A side of the single is Part 1 (1:55), on the B side Part 2 (2:12). Both parts were published in the same year on an album of the same name . The song has now also appeared on numerous compilations . The take from Arthur Smith Studios can be heard for the first time on the Star Time box set .

Charts and reception

In the original version by James Brown with "This is a Hit!" hot, Papa's Got a Brand New Bag was the first of his songs to reach the top 10 of the Billboard singles chart - number 8.

Brown won his first Grammy for this song ; He was at the ceremony in 1966 in the category R & B excellent.

The music magazine Rolling Stone ranks Papa's Got a Brand New Bag at number 71 in its current list of the 500 best songs of all time .

Trivia

One episode of the series The Simpsons is originally called Poppa's Got a Brand New Badge ( Season 13 / Episode 22 ).
