Star Time is a boxing set by James Brown . It contains 71 songs , originally from 1956 to 1984 included were. The compilation , first published by Polydor on four CDs in 1991 , focuses on the greatest hits from four decades. In addition to the singles , alternative versions and live recordings are also considered. The songs are essentially assigned to the genres of soul , rhythm & blues and funk . The title refers to the album Live at the Apollo . There the announcer asks the audience before Brown appears: "Are you ready for Star Time?"

Composers and musicians

Most of the compositions on Star Time include James Brown as the author, but there are also some third-party compositions. There are also songs in which Brown's accompanying musicians are named as co-authors.

Since Star Time contains songs from several decades, the number of musicians who accompanied Brown is very large. Well-known sidemen on the original recordings included: saxophonist Maceo Parker , trombonist Fred Wesley and bassist Bootsy Collins . The backing bands represented on the compilation, some of which also included session musicians , traded under different names, such as The Famous Flames or The JB's . The song Unity, Pt. 1 , an approach to hip-hop , Brown recorded with DJ Afrika Bambaataa .

Selection of songs

The producers of the compilation, Harry Weinger, Cliff White, Oscar A. Yong and Bill Levenson, mainly focused on the 60s and 70s when selecting the songs. The 50s were less, the 80s were almost completely ignored. This weighting is partly due to the fact that the 60s and 70s were James Brown's most productive period. On the other hand, there was a phase of his work in these two decades that is commonly regarded as his most creative. It shall Papa's Got a Brand New Bag of 1965 as the blueprint of the radio.

Although Star Time explicitly honors Brown's hits, it lacks its second most successful single (number 4 on the Billboard Singles Chart ) - the pop song Living in America . His most successful single (3rd place), I Got You (I Feel Good), on the other hand, is included on Star Time . With I Don't Mind , a song from Live at the Apollo , his most successful album (number 2 on the Billboard album charts ), was also included in the compilation.

Formats and versions

Star Time was released on CD , MC and MP3 ; it was not released on LP . In 2007, Star Time was reissued by Polydor and published with a different cover . The track lists of both versions are identical.

Polydor published in 1991, parallel to the first edition of Star Time , also 20 All-Time Greatest Hits! , a compilation that, with its exclusive focus on James Brown's greatest hits , can be considered the essence of Star Time and is therefore a classic best-of album. All on 20 all-time greatest hits! included songs are also featured on Star Time ; partly in longer versions.

Charts and reception

Star Time has received positive reviews almost without exception since it was first published - if only because it is the first really carefully compiled compilation of James Brown's music. It is listed with five out of five possible stars in the Allmusic music database . The music magazine Rolling Stone put it in their list of the 500 best albums of all time at number 75. And the music critic Robert Christgau described Star Time as the “finest box set ever released”.

Star Time's highest ranking on Billboard's R&B charts was 89th in 1991.

At the 1992 Grammy Awards , the authors of the liner notes - including Brown himself - were awarded a Grammy . Brown also received a Grammy for his life's work at this award .
