Paper Mario: The Origami King ( Japanese : ペ ー パ ー マ リ オ オ リ ガ ミ キ ン グ , Hepburn : Pēpā Mario: Origami Kingu ) is a role-playing game developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo on July 17, 2020 exclusively for its current Nintendo Switch game console . It is the sixth game in the Paper Mario series and the successor to Paper Mario: Color Splash ( Wii U , 2016).

King Olly, the main antagonist of Paper Mario: The Origami King , who describes himself as the ruler of the origami kingdom, has turned Princess Peach into origami , ripped out her castle and tied it with streamers, and plans to fold the entire world made of paper . Mario sets out to thwart this plan. On his way, like in some earlier Paper Mario parts, he gets to know other companions who support him on his journey, with Olivia being his main companion.

The first plans for a new offshoot of the Paper Mario series were leaked in early 2020 . According to the UK online computer game magazine Eurogamer , Nintendo planned to announce the game during the Electronic Entertainment Expo ( E3 ) in 2020 as part of Mario's 35th birthday. However, the fair has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

On Metacritic , Paper Mario: The Origami King has a Metascore of 81 out of 100 possible points, based on 54 ratings.

The German online magazine for computer games 4Players rated the game with 88 out of 100 possible points and awarded the brand "Very Good" and praised the game for its graphics, the "very decent size" and the music. The “very linear game structure” and the “generally low level of difficulty” were criticized.

PC Games rated it 7 out of 10 points and praised the graphics, the atmosphere and the humor and criticized the combat system, among other things.
