Paper Mario: The Legend of Äonentor ( Japanese ペーパーマリオRPG , Pepa Mario RPG ) is a 2004 published video game of genre RPG , which of Intelligent Systems for the GameCube was developed. The Legend of the Gate of Eons is the third Mario role-playing game and the second game in the Paper Mario series and the second appearance of Mario in the form of Paper Mario.

The game takes over many elements from its predecessor, Paper Mario , including a turn -based combat system and a game world that deals with paper . The central task in the game is to obtain seven star jewels and to rescue Princess Peach . It is the predecessor of Super Paper Mario .

Game mechanics

The graphics are a mixture of a 3D environment and 2D figures that look like they are made of paper . In different places in the game, Mario is cursed and learns new moves, all of which revolve around the paper. Mario can transform himself into a ship or a plane on certain platforms. He also learns to curl up. The environment is also peppered with paper effects, for example objects that conceal treasures can be blown away like a sheet of paper; or a wall folds into a staircase.

If Mario touches an opponent, a fight ensues. If he uses his jump or the hammer, he can land a first attack outside of the normal combat rounds. The same goes for Mario's opponents. In the actual rounds, it is Mario and his partner's turn first, followed by his opponents. During a fight, Mario can perform various offensive or defensive actions or use an item . The player can intensify his actions by pressing a specific button. When it is the opponent's turn, Mario can weaken or even counter attacks. Mario and his partner have a certain number of power points (CP). If the partner's strength points drop to zero in the course of a fight, the partner can no longer be used in this and the following fights until he is healed again. If Mario's HP drops to zero, this means the end of the game. Flower points (BP), which are used for stronger attacks, are shared by Mario and his partners. For surviving battles, Mario receives star points, depending on the level and opponent. If Mario collects 100 star points, he goes up a level. The fights take place in front of an audience. If Mario is successful, the audience supports him with star energy (which Mario needs for star attacks) and throws items that help or damage Mario. If the audience doesn't like the fight, Mario leaves it alone.

Mario can use items in and out of combat. The range of items varies from healing, status-changing items to items that damage opponents. In the game it is also possible to cook items and change them or combine two items on the stove. Mario can also buy medals or get medals from defeated opponents, which, when created, give Mario a new ability. Throughout the game, Mario is always accompanied by an active person. All the people on Mario's team have unique skills that are also required for solving puzzles.

Plot and framework

Paper Mario: The Legend of the Gate of Eons is based on a paper version of the Mushroom Kingdom, even if the majority of the locations are new. Most places are assigned to a topic. B. Gloomy Village an eerie and dark village. Some of the characters are known, such as B. the Koopas, others appear for the first time. The story is divided into eight chapters plus a prologue.

Characters

The Legend of the Gate of Eons contains many characters, most of which are not playable (so-called non-player characters (NPC)). Interaction with them is necessary from time to time to progress in the game. Many of the characters are integrated into side quests. As in the predecessor, Mario is supported by accompanying characters, one of whom can be active at a time. There are a total of 6 such accompanying persons who join Mario's team during the normal course of the game and one person who can be unlocked in a secondary task. Each character has individual skills that can also be used outside of combat. So z. B. the archeology student Gumbrina Mario provide information about the respective whereabouts. After each chapter there is a short sequence in which the player can control Princess Peach and then Bowser. Princess Peach is trapped on the moon and is being examined by the TECH computer, which falls in love with her. Bowser tries to get to the Star Gems before Mario but is always one step behind.

action

The game begins with a legend about a city on the coast that was destroyed by a catastrophe. The port city of Rohlingen was later built on the ruins of this city. What remains of the city is the aeon gate, behind which there is said to be a huge treasure. Princess Peach found a treasure map in the marketplace of Brutes, which she sent Mario with the request to follow her to Brothers. When Mario arrives in Blanks, the princess has disappeared. Mario meets Gumbrina, who is also on the trail of the treasure of blanks, and together they go to Professor Gumbarth. He explains to them that the aeon gate can only be opened with the seven legendary star jewels and that Mario's map is a magical map that can show you the way to the star jewels. Assuming that Peach is alone in search of the treasure, Mario wants to find the star jewels and thus Princess Peach.

In reality, Princess Peach was kidnapped by the Crucions. Despite being trapped, she can help and inform Mario with email messages. Behind the aeon gate, a demon is actually held captive who is responsible for the destruction of the original city. The crucions hold Peach captive so that the demon can get her body in return for its power. This happens, but with the help of the seven star jewels, Mario can save the princess. Mario and Princess Peach sail back to Mario's house.

development

Nintendo first announced in 2003 at the Game Developers Conference that a successor to Paper Mario was being developed. The game was temporarily called Paper Mario 2 (in Japan Mario Story 2 ). It was possible to play for the first time at E3 2004, where three different locations were shown.
