Since 1996, the Jump 'n' Run Series Super Mario from Nintendo several computer role-playing games developed.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

With Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars , the first Mario game based on the genre of role-playing games appeared on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1996 . It was developed by the company Square and distributed by the console manufacturer Nintendo . Super Mario RPG only appeared in Japan and North America at the time . The game was also released in Europe in 2008 on the Virtual Console as a paid download for the Wii console.

The Paper Mario series has its own graphic style. Characters and objects are two-dimensional , while the game worlds are three-dimensional . The characters look like they have been cut out of paper , similar to the paper cutting technique .

The games have been developed by Intelligent Systems , a first-party developer for Nintendo , since their inception in 2000 . So far, five games have been created, all of which were released on different consoles.

The player takes on the role of Mario in all games. Unlike in many other Mario games, however, the player also takes on the role of other characters in some parts of the game, such as Princess Peach or Bowser .

Paper Mario

Paper Mario was released in Japan in 2000 (there as マ リ オ ス ト ー リ ーMario Story ) and in 2001 in North America and Europe for the Nintendo 64 game console . Paper Mario was developed by Nintendo's development team Intelligent Systems. Originally the game was supposed to be called Super Mario RPG 2 - but this was changed to the current name Paper Mario before it was released .

Paper Mario: The Legend of the Gate of Eons

Paper Mario: The Legend of the Gate of Eons (English title: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door , Japanese title: ペ ー パ ー マ リ オ RPG Paper Mario RPG ) was released in 2004 for the Nintendo GameCube .

Super Paper Mario

The Jump 'n' Run Super Paper Mario for the Wii console was released in April 2007 in the Japanese and North American markets. The European release date was September 14, 2007. Super Paper Mario takes up the cut-out sheet look of the Paper Mario role-playing games and develops them into a fundamental game element.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star

A new Paper Mario part for Nintendo 3DS was presented at E3 2010 . It was supposed to appear in the fall of that year, but the date of publication was later moved to the winter of 2012. The game principle is not like in the predecessor Super Paper Mario, but goes back to the roots, so there are turn-based battles again. At E3 2012, the game received its final name: Paper Mario: Sticker Star . The developer is Intelligent Systems. Paper Mario: Sticker Star was released in Europe on December 7, 2012.

Paper Mario: Color Splash

On March 3, 2016, the new Paper Mario offshoot for Wii U , Paper Mario: Color Splash , was presented in a Nintendo Direct presentation. Paper Mario: Color Splash was released in North America and Europe on October 7, 2016.

The game received negative feedback even before it was released, as the title would be based too much on the predecessor Sticker Star and classic RPG elements, such as in The Legend of the Gate of Eons , would hardly be present. The game received mostly positive reviews from the trade press; at Metacritic it scored 76 out of 100 points.

Paper Mario: The Origami King

On May 14, 2020, Nintendo surprisingly announced the sixth part on their social media. This is called Paper Mario: The Origami King was released internationally on Friday, July 17th, 2020.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

In November 2003, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (Japanese title: マ リ オ & ル イ ー ジ RPG Mario & Luigi RPG ) was released, the third Mario role-playing game for Game Boy Advance at the time . The Mario & Luigi games are developed by AlphaDream . A remake of the game was released for Nintendo 3DS in October 2017 under the title Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions .

Mario & Luigi: Together through time

The direct successor to Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga called Mario & Luigi: Together Through Time (English title: Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time ; Japanese title: マ リ オ & ル イ ー ジ RPG2 Mario & Luigi RPG 2 ) was released on November 28, 2005 in Japan and January 27, 2006 in Europe for the Nintendo DS .

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Adventure

Another successor was under the name Mario & Luigi: Bowser Adventure (English title: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story ; Japanese title: マ リ オ & ル イ ー ジ RPG3 !!! Mario & Luigi RPG 3 !!! ) in Japan on February 12th Released in 2009 for the Nintendo DS. It was released in North America on September 14, 2009. It has been available in Europe since October 9, 2009.

During a Nintendo Direct on January 11, 2018, a remake of the game for Nintendo 3DS was announced under the name Mario & Luigi: Bowser Adventure + Bowser Jrs Reise . This remake was released in North America on January 11th and in Europe on January 25th, 2019. This revised version of the game has improved graphics and contains a new subplot entitled "Bowser Jr.'s Journey".

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros.

The successor Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros. (English title: Mario & Luigi: Dream Team ; Japanese title: マ リ オ & ル イ ー ジ RPG4 ド リ ー ム ア ド ベ ン チ ャ ーMario & Luigi RPG 4: Dream Adventure ) was released on July 18, 2013 in Japan. The game was released in Europe on June 12, 2013. It is the first part of the Mario - & - Luigi series that was released for Nintendo 3DS .

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. is the fifth installment in the Mario & Luigi series. The game was developed by AlphaDream for the Nintendo 3DS and published by Nintendo . It was first published in Japan on December 3, 2015. In Europe and Australia, it was published on December 4 and 10, 2015, respectively, and in North America on January 22, 2016. There it is called Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam .

It was announced on June 16, 2015 during the Nintendo Digital Event at E3 2015.
