The Velké Losiny paper mill is a paper mill in Velké Losiny (German Groß Ullersdorf ) in Okres Šumperk ( Mährisch Schönberg district ). The manufacture of hand-made paper , which began in the 16th century, continues to this day. As the oldest continuously operating paper mill in the Czech Republic , it was declared a national cultural monument.
history
Already before the 16th century there was a grain mill operated with the water of the Desná in Groß Ullersdorf . This was acquired by Jan von Žerotín the Younger from the old Moravian noble family of Žerotín and converted into a paper mill between 1591 and 1596. The holdings in 1596 are documented, this year is contained in the watermark of the oldest preserved paper together with the coat of arms of the owner .
The region developed into a center of paper production, a paper mill was also located in the neighboring village of Jindřichov (Heinrichsthal) , at the locations in Lukavice (Lukawetz) and Olšany (Olleschau) , modern paper mills that are still active today have developed from the paper mills.
In 1729 what was probably the first stamping mill in Moravia was put into operation. During the upswing, at the turn of the 19th century, the exterior facade was redesigned in the late Baroque style.
As a technical innovation, a generator was installed in the Mühlkanal in 1913 and the most modern machines were purchased for the time.

The production of handmade paper of the highest quality continues to this day, and supplies the European and American markets.
In 1987 a museum was set up in which the historical development of paper production is documented and the production processes can be observed.
Since 2002 the paper mill Velké Losiny has been designated as a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The trials, the mill as a World Heritage Site of UNESCO to have list remained, so far unsuccessfully.
