Papineau is a regional county municipality ( French municipalité régionale du comté, MRC ) in the Canadian province of Québec .

It is located in the Outaouais administrative region and consists of 24 subordinate administrative units (one city, 21 municipalities and two cantonal municipalities). The MRC was founded on January 1, 1983. The main town is Papineauville . The population is 21,824 and the area is 2926.9 km², which corresponds to a population density of 7.5 inhabitants per km² (2011). The MRC is named after Louis-Joseph Papineau .
