Marco Papiro

Marco Papiro (* 1975 in Basel ) is a Swiss - Italian experimental musician , producer of electronic music and graphic artist .

biography

Papiro received a classical music education as a child, and played violin, synthesizer and bass in various bands before he began to publish his own self-produced music under the name Papiro. Its influences are manifold: drone , minimal , folk from all times and countries, psychedelic music , contemporary music , industrial - but also light music , pop and new age . His compositions are mostly instrumental, meditative and hypnotic , but at times also bizarre and humorous. Papiro is a multi-instrumentalist with a penchant for older synthesizers like the EMS VCS3 , the Moog Sonic Six, the Roland Jupiter 4 or the Serge Modular, which he likes to and often uses for his music.

Marco Papiro has worked with musicians such as Mani Neumeier , Hans Koch , Gyða Valtýsdóttir and Damo Suzuki . He is also a regular guest with the psychedelic garage band Roy & the Devil's Motorcycle. In 2005 he founded the experimental noise group Mir together with drummers Daniel Buess and Michael Zaugg, in which Marlon McNeill and Yanik Soland later also participated. Until Daniel Buess passed away in March 2016, the band played over 100 concerts in Europe , Brazil and Japan . As a producer , Papiro inspired and accompanied the new editions of “Heartbeat Earth / Darken the Senses” and The Singing Star Lantern / Folklore of Space 1982 by the Swiss artist “Die Weltraumforscher”.

Marco Papiro also works as an unorthodox DJ . Together with Markus Stähli from Roy & the Devil's Motorcycle, he organizes a monthly event at which the two expand their eclectic sets by using different playback speeds, additional instruments, tapes and effects.

Marco Papiro studied graphics at the Basel School of Design from 1995 to 1999 and has been teaching there since 2006. As a graphic artist, he is best known for his posters and album covers for artists such as Sun Araw, Spacemen 3 , Spectrum (with Peter Kember aka Sonic Boom), Panda Bear , Z'EV, Antoine Chessex , Oren Ambarchi and many others.
