The 19,100 hectare Parco Naturale Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino in the east of the province of Trento , Italy includes the 2700 hectares of Paneveggio spruce forest in the north , part of the Pale di San Martino Dolomite massif in the south-east and part of the Lagorai porphyry chain in the west .

The nature park was founded in 1967 and is now divided into four zones of different degrees of protection ( total reserves , guided reserves, controlled reserves and special reserves). The seat of the nature park is in the Villa Welsperg in Tonadico with a lithothek (mineral collection), xylothek (wood and tree collection) and a herbarium for shrubs ( fruticoteca ). There are other visitor centers in San Martino di Castrozza , in Paneveggio by Lake Forte Buso and in Caoria in the Vanoi Valley (municipality of Canal San Bovo ).

The Paneveggio spruce forest, located at 1500 to 2000 m, is not only ecologically important, but is also known by violin makers for its hazel fibers, which are particularly suitable for violin making , and is therefore also called the violin forest ( Foresta dei violini ).

The park is accessed through Strada Statale 50 del Grappa e del Passo Rolle . Hospices were set up on both sides of Passo Rolle at an early stage . B. the Paneveggio Hospice (later Hotel Paneveggio, now Albergo La Bicocca) and the San Martino di Castrozza Hospice.
