Prince Paribatra Sukhumbandh was the 33rd child (and 13th son) of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and was born in the Grand Palace to one of his principal wives and half-sister Queen Sukhumala Marasri . He was trained there, where he developed a love for traditional Thai music. In 1897 he went on a trip to Europe with his father, which lasted several months. Here he came to the Prussian Cadet Corps in Potsdam and initially graduated from a pre-school, later switched to the main cadet school in Groß-Lichterfelde . Here not only military knowledge and skills, but also topics from general knowledge, as they were imparted in the Prussian secondary schools. At that time, the prince lived at Hallesches Tor , so that he could hardly have followed the usual daily routine; rather, an officer was hired for his private training, Captain Albert Pasquay. On March 22, 1900, he was assigned to the Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 4 "Queen Augusta" at Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin as an ensign before he went to the Kassel War School for six months . Here the actual military topics were dealt with in a five-month course: u. a. Tactics, army organization, weapons theory, fortification theory, terrain theory, and recording with plan drawing, military business style and service knowledge. In 1901 the prince was promoted to lieutenant , then returned to the 4th Guards Grenadier Regiment and was promoted to captain on the occasion of his release on March 10, 1903 .

Military career

After his return to Siam, Prince Paribatra was appointed Chief of Staff of the Siamese Armed Forces , but he traveled with his father a second time to Germany, where Kaiser Wilhelm II provided him à la suite of Queen Augusta Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 4, so that although she had no official obligations, she was allowed to wear the Prussian uniform.

The prince became under his half-brother King Vajiravudh (Rama VI.) Supreme Commander Siamese Navy, Navy Minister and Army Minister. He was under King Prajadhipok (Rama VII), also his half-brother, a member of the Privy Council , from 1926 Kalahom (Minister of War) of the country and from 1928 Mahatthai (comparable to an interior or prime minister). He was ousted by the coup in June 1932 , which ended the absolute monarchy in Siam. Many members of the Chakri family had to leave Siam, including Prince Paribatra.

Late period

Prince Paribatra spent the last part of his life in Bandung on the Dutch-East Indian island of Java, which was conquered by the Japanese in 1942 and held until 1945. Prince Paribatra died in Bandung on January 18, 1944. Only in 1950, shortly before the wedding of King Bhumibol Adulyadej with Queen Sirikit , was his body transferred to Thailand and cremated in Bangkok in Sanam Luang according to the Buddhist rite.
