The plot of land at the corner of the building block at Schmiedestraße 10 - today's address - was already being built on in the Middle Ages . This is where the old so-called Leibnizhaus stood before it was destroyed during the air raids on Hanover in World War II. The elongated multi-storey car park in Schmiedestrasse was built in its place in the late post-war period from 1965 to 1966, based on plans by the architect Walter Hämer . For the client, Union Boden GmbH , based in Hanover, a steel frame building was developed with three basement and five upper floors, which are made accessible to motor vehicle traffic by a double-threaded spindle. The curtain wall created Hämer together with the sculptor Hans Uhlmann from gray and white, different anodized fins from aluminum .

Two parking garages are listed in Hanover. In addition to the Schmiedestraße parking garage, there is the Osterstraße parking garage, which was built in the 1970s .

In front of the parking garage, a steel sculpture, also created in 1965 by Hans Uhlmann and installed as art in public space , was placed.
