The five-story car park with a basement has 492 parking spaces for cars . It was built in reinforced concrete skeleton based on a design by the architect Heinz Wilke . In addition, the building has an attached mezzanine floor with a flat roof . It houses a bowling alley in the basement and shops and restaurants in the basement.

The building with the long side facing Osterstrasse and the transverse side facing Baringstrasse consists of two building blocks that are partially intersected. The facade is made up of a multitude of parking bays that are nested at a 60-degree angle and protrude like balconies . Its scaled, curved parapets made of structural concrete shape the external appearance of the building. In the design of the facades, influences of the late Ludwig Mies van der Rohe become clear.

importance

There are currently (2020) two listed parking garages in Hanover. In addition to the Osterstrasse multi-storey car park, there is the Schmiedestrasse car park built in the 1960s .

The construction task for the Osterstrasse multi-storey car park resulted from the increasing volume of motorized traffic in the second half of the 20th century and the necessary infrastructure for stationary traffic. The building vividly conveys the role of Hanover as a German example of the car-friendly city .

The suggestion for placing the car park under protection as a monument came from the Lower Saxony Chamber of Architects . She named it on the list of suggested buildings she published in 2007. This led to a historical referral by the Lower Saxony State Office for Monument Preservation . As a result, the authority justified the monumental property of the multi-storey car park with its importance for the history of Hanover city construction, the history of traffic and the history of architecture and art because of the exemplary expression of the brutalist architectural style. The Osterstraße multi-storey car park is an outstanding and successful example of “ Béton brut ” architecture.
