The metropolitan area is immediately east of West 130th Street and extends on either side of US Route 42 , the Cleveland-Columbus highway. Neighboring parishes are Brook Park and Middleburg Heights to the west and Parma on the other three sides.

Parma Heights is primarily residential. There are numerous office and commercial buildings along the main street. A forest area on Big Creek, which is part of the Cleveland Metroparks , serves as a recreational area .

Parma Heights dates back to Parma Township, which was staked out during the Connecticut Western Reserve's land survey . The first settlers arrived in 1816; In 1911 the western part of the township was spun off under the name Parma Heights. Despite its proximity to Cleveland, Parma Heights remained rural well into the 20th century. Only after the Second World War began strong population growth; the population rose from (1940) 1,330 to (1960) 18,100 and reached its peak in 1970 with 27,192 inhabitants. By 1990 the number of inhabitants went back to its present value.
