geography

The capital of the state of Bismarck is located at a distance of around 160 kilometers to the southeast. The distance to the west of Williston is about 100 kilometers. The Van Hook Arm of Lake Sakakawea is 10 kilometers away to the west. The North Dakota Highway 1804 runs through the city . The Canadian province of Saskatchewan begins 90 kilometers north .

Parshall Oil Field

Near the city is the Parshall Oil Field above the geologically significant Bakken Formation , which contains huge oil and gas reserves. These are obtained using the hydraulic fracturing process (fracking) and are among the richest of their kind in the USA in the Parschall area. The extraction of these mineral resources brought a certain economic and financial upswing for the region, but it also has many negative effects, since road traffic has grown rapidly and the effects on the environment cannot be assessed.

Demographics

In 2011 a population of 910 people was determined, which means a decrease of 7.2% compared to the year 2000. The average age of the residents in 2011 was 31.6 years, well below the average for North Dakota, which was 44.8 years. 57.3% of the population belonged to different Indian tribes at this time. In the vicinity of Parshall, because of the fracking boom, so-called “men-camps” are being set up for the workers employed on the Parshall Oil Field, but their residents are not residents of the city.
