Parsifal is a West German-French film produced in 1982 by Hans-Jürgen Syberberg based on the musical drama of the same name ( "Bühnenweihfestspiel" ) by Richard Wagner . It was first shown out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival . The film started in Germany on June 17, 1982.
action
The action begins in front of the huge replica of a death mask. King Amfortas has the grail of Christ, able to give life. When the said king lost the Holy Lance to the renegade Klingsor, he was marked with a non-healing wound. Only an innocent man can help the king and must come to knowledge through compassion. This innocent is embodied by the young Parsifal, who now goes into the realm of Klingsor and his helper Kundry.
background
The soundtrack is a complete performance of the opera, conducted by Armin Jordan ; but the imagery used is a blend of medieval costumes, puppetry , Nazi - emblems and a huge death mask of Richard Wagner. For the equipment, Syberberg u. a. Elements from Hieronymus Bosch's triptychs, such as the Garden of Earthly Delights . Syberberg chose the Bayreuth Festspielhaus as the optical cipher for the Grail . By exchanging the actor, Parsifal becomes an androgynous being , thus preparing a union of man and woman at the end of the second act.
For the 2004 to 2007 at the Bayreuth Festival shown staging of Parsifal by Christoph Schlingensief Syberberg film was a major source of inspiration.
