The Radical and Social Democratic Party ( PRSD ), also known as the Radical Party, is a liberal - socialist party of the political center and center left , founded in 1994 by the merger of the Radical Party and the Chilean Social Democrats. Their interests are comparable to those of the Chilean Radical Party, founded in 1863, which in turn emerged from the extreme wing of the Liberal Party.

It is represented all over Chile and belongs to the coalition of parties for democracy . The Socialist International is connected with it . There are also close political relations with the Social Democratic Party of Germany , the Friedrich Ebert Foundation , the Radical Citizens' Union of Argentina , the Danish Det Radikalische Venstre , the FDP and the French Parti radical de gauche .

Inner structure

The PRSD is headed by a chairman. The Central Council ( Directiva Central ) as the highest decision-making body has 28 members. The party chairman, his deputy, the general secretary and the treasurer belong automatically to the central council, the other 23 members are elected by the party congress. The party council ( Consejo General ), which meets at least once a year, has 104 members sent by the 13 regional associations. The Party as the highest decision-making body meets every two years. Each local association sends a delegate for around 100 members, and mayors, city councilors and members of parliament are automatically appointed as party congress delegates. The PRSD only has 12 out of 345 mayors (including in the city of Chillán ) and 117 city councilors.

program

The PRSD program is based on secular humanism and the principles of social democracy . The PRSD strives for a democratic, solidary and humanistic society that satisfies the material and intellectual needs of the people through a democratic and social constitutional state .

The PRSD is committed to free markets and private companies, but also to state regulation of the economy. State economic policy should strive for adequate economic growth , full employment , secure jobs, a balanced state budget and a fair distribution of income .

In terms of foreign policy, the PRSD advocates the integration of Latin America, the right of peoples to self-determination , accelerated disarmament and a peaceful solution to conflicts.

history

The current seat of the party in the Barrio París-Londres in the center of Santiago was also the seat of the center-left party alliance Concertación , which formed the government of Chile for many years after the fall of the dictatorship.

The PRSD emerged on August 18, 1994 from the merger between the Radical Party ( Partido Radical ), founded in 1863, and the Social Democratic Party of Chile ( Partido Socialdemócrata de Chile ). The left-liberal Radical Party was in the tradition of radical-secular liberalism and had its heyday in the first half of the last century. It provided all Chilean presidents between 1938 and 1952. In the parliamentary elections of 1993, however, the once so successful party could no longer achieve electoral success and therefore joined forces with the equally unsuccessful Social Democratic Party, which had been founded in 1973 by supporters of moderate center-left politics.
