The Passauer Tor ( Czech Horní brána - Upper Gate ) in Prachatice ( German Prachatitz ), a city in the Jihočeský kraj region (South Bohemia) in the Czech Republic , was the second city gate of the city fortifications . The last remains were broken off in 1859.

history

The city of Prachatice was fortified by a city wall from the 14th century. The salt trade route, the Goldene Steig (Zlatá stezka), led from the Passau Gate through the Salt Route to the market square and from there via the church square (Kostelní náměstí) to the Piseker Tor (Dolní brána - Lower Gate ). There weren't any more goals. The Piseker Tor has been preserved from both city gates and has been a protected cultural monument since May 1958 .

The Passau Gate was expanded into a two-part structure in the Renaissance style in the 16th century . Above the gate, the Záblatská bašta (or Červená bašta ) (Sablater or Red Bastion) was built in 1524 . The residents of Záblatí (Sablat) built this as a punishment for trying to relocate the Goldener Steig in the Blanice Valley (Flanitz) . During the Thirty Years' War , both parts of the gate suffered severe damage and the newer part had to be demolished.

Two chapels were built in front of the gate in the Baroque period (18th century). The St. John Nepomuk Chapel and a larger one dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua . They are also considered the patron saints of travelers or horses and donkeys.

The older inner gate, like other parts of the city wall, was demolished in 1859. The fortress pond opposite the gate system was leveled by 1881 and converted into a city park by the beautification association. Crown Princess Stephanie of Belgium gave the "Stephanie Park" its name. Its iron fence was completely removed in the 1940s and 1950s.

During the construction of the gas pipeline through the Solní in 1993, the area of the gate was archaeologically examined. Parts of the foundation and high medieval stone structures were exposed. This area of the Solní was repaved in 2004.

description

At the place of the gate there are two memorial plaques today. The first plaque labeled “Horní brána (Pasovská brána)” reminds us of the location of the Passau Gate in Czech and English. The second "Solní ulice" is about the reconstruction of the salt road from 2004.
