The Pastorale (Pastoral Letter) is a literary work that by Francesc Eiximenis in Valencia on Latin interlocutory 1397 and 1400 was written. The book is dedicated to Hug de Llupià , the Bishop of Valencia .

origin

The pastoral was written for the new bishop of Valencia, Hug de Llupià i Bages , because the pastor of Penàguila , Miquel de Miracle, had asked him to do so, as the introduction of the book confirms. Possibly the book was written when Hug de Llupià was appointed Bishop of Valencia in 1397 or 1398. Or maybe the book was written when Hug de Llupià finally arrived in Valencia on August 9, 1400.

Structure and content

The book contains one hundred and sixty-seven sections, and consists of four essays. It deals with the duties of bishops , although initially it has to do with priests.

This work could perhaps correspond to the Onzè (eleventh volume) of Lo Crestià , which was not written by and which was supposed to deal with priests. Nonetheless, the priesthood is also a sacrament , and the Desè (tenth volume) of Lo Crestià should deal with it.

This book follows the model of the Regula Pastoralis (rule of pastoral letters) of Gregory the Great , which is considered a textbook for the life of priests and bishops.

pads

There is an incunabulum published in Barcelona by Pere Posa on December 5, 1495 . A critical edition and translation into Catalan was recently completed as a doctoral thesis. This dissertation is only available online.

Curt Wittlin had translated five sections (36 to 40) into German in an interesting article. This article explores Eiximenis' hidden antimonarchism and antioligarchism.
