Patriarchate of the West Indies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Patriarchate of the West Indies ( Spanish Patriarcado de las Indias Occidentales , Latin Patriarchatus Indiarum Occidentalium ) refers to the West Indies and was founded on May 11, 1524 as a titular patriarchate . There has never been a diocese with this title. The title of Patriarch of the West Indies ( titular patriarch ) was awarded as an honorary title, usually to a Spanish bishop who was also Grand Chaplain of the Spanish Army . From 1540 to 1920 the Archbishop of Toledo - who was also the Primate of Spain - bore this title. The title has been vacant since 1963.
