Patricia Routledge

Dame Katherine Patricia Routledge , DBE (born February 17, 1929 in Birkenhead , England ) is a British film, television and stage actress . She gained worldwide fame in the role of the snob "Hyacinth Bucket" in the sitcom Mehr Schein als Sein .

Life

Patricia Routledge was born on February 17, 1929 in the Birkenheader neighborhood of Tranmere, the daughter of Catherine and Isaac Routledge. Her father was a haberdashery dealer and owned his own shop. She attended the schools of Birkenhead and later studied English language and literature in Liverpool. Routledge received top marks and graduated with honors. At university she met her future good friend Edmund Colledge, who persuaded her to become an actress, which is why she completed an acting degree in Bristol.

She lives in Chichester and is an active participant in the parish.

During the New Year Honors 2017, Routledge was named Dame Commander of the British Empire by the British Queen.

Career

Routledge performed professionally for the first time at the Liverpool Playhouse. She has appeared in numerous roles in the West End of London and on Broadway in New York . Routledge was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company . For their performances in the pieces When the Nightingale sang… , Richard III. and the operetta Candide she was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award , which she won in 1988 for Candide.

Patricia Routledge also played in several musicals on Broadway. In 1968 she won the Tony Award for best actress in a musical. She was particularly successful in the role of Ruth in Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance on New York's Off-Broadway . The production was a great success and is considered to be one of the best productions of this work. Because of this success, it was decided to film the material. Almost all actors in the production were hired, only Patricia Routledge was replaced by Angela Lansbury because of her name, which was not yet known in America .

Movie and TV

Routledge has had regular appearances in film and television since 1968, with most of these films only being shown in the UK or the US.

She only achieved worldwide fame and cult status in 1990 in the sitcom Mehr Schein als Sein in the role of Hyacinth Bucket, a British cliché snob who drives those around her crazy with her attempts to achieve more recognition and a higher social status. The series was a worldwide hit, broadcasting in the United States, Australia and Canada alongside the United Kingdom and repeating it to this day. Routledge was honored with several awards and left the show in 1996. Routledge then played the lead role in the crime series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates . Today Routledge rarely appears in films and series.
