Patricia Carola Velásquez Semprún (born January 31, 1971 in Maracaibo ) is a Venezuelan actress and model .

Life

Velásquez is of Indian descent, her mother was a Wayúu . In 1987 she graduated from San Vicente de Paul High School. In the choice of "Miss Venezuela" in 1989, she reached seventh place. She attended college where she studied engineering . Then she moved to Milan to work as a model. Her photos have appeared in several issues of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue ; she worked for Chanel and Victoria's Secret , among others .

She made her acting debut in 1996 alongside Jean Reno in Francis Veber's adventure film Jaguar . Her portrayal of Anck-Su-Namun in the films The Mummy and The Mummy Returns made her known to a wider international audience.

In 2002 she founded the Foundation Wayúu Taya to promote and support the ethnic group Wayúu.

In 2003 she was named a UNESCO "Artist for Peace" by Kōichirō Matsuura .
