Patrick Augustine Sheehan Irish : An Canónach Pádraig Aguistín Ó Síothcháin (born March 17, 1852 in Mallow , County Cork , † October 5, 1913 in Doneraile , County Cork) was an Irish Roman Catholic priest and writer.

Life

Canon Patrick Augustine Sheehan of Doneraile

Patrick Augustine Sheehan was born on March 17, 1852 in the market town of Mallow, County Cork, to Patrick Sheehan and Johanna Regan, the third of five children. According to the parish register, he was given the baptismal sacrament a few days later by the pastor at the time, JC Wigmore, in the presence of the godparent and godmother, Timothy Cronin and Mary Ann Relehan. His parents died when he was 11 years old. Sheehan, his brother and two sisters were guarded by the village pastor and future Bishop of Cloyne , John McCarthy .

The young man who was interested in literature received his school education in Mallow, his hometown, and at the boys' college of the Cloyne diocese in Fermoy . From 1869 he studied at St. Patrick's College in Maynooth . Although it little attracted the theological courses and in spite of prolonged illness he graduated already from the age of 22 and had to reach the minimum age to wait a year before it on April 18, 1875 by the Bishop of Cork , William Delany , the ordination received.

After his ordination he went to Exeter in the English diocese of Plymouth , where many Irish emigrants lived. Here he established his reputation as an outstanding preacher. His duties included chaplaincy in Dartmoor Prison , where he met a number of those involved in the Fenian uprising of 1867. He later dedicated the novel Glenanaar to them . After two years he returned to Ireland and worked as a curatus in Mallow and Cobh . He was appointed pastor of the parish of Doneraile, County Cork, Ireland on July 4, 1895, where he also wrote many of his works.

In 1904 he was appointed cathedral chapter of the cathedral chapter of the diocese of Cloyne. At this point he was already known as a writer. Even so, he was later known less by his full name than by the name Canon Sheehan (Canon or Canon Sheehan).

His work was particularly dedicated to depicting social problems such as poverty and hunger in the countryside. In the course of the 20th century, however, it was largely forgotten.
