Patrick Joseph Walsh (born April 9, 1931 in Cobh , County Cork ) is a retired Roman Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Down and Connor in Northern Ireland .

Life

Walsh attended St Marys CBGS Belfast and then St Malachy's College in Belfast . He studied Roman Catholic theology and philosophy at Queen's University of Belfast in Belfast and then in Rome. Walsh was ordained a priest on February 25, 1956. After his ordination, Walsh studied at Cambridge and received a Masters in Mathematics from Christ's College . From 1958 to 1964 Walsh taught as a math teacher at St MacNissi's College . From 1964 to 1970 he was a chaplain at Queen's University of Belfast. In 1970 Walsh was named president of St. Malachy's College .

Walsh was named titular bishop of Ros Cré by Pope John Paul II in 1983 and appointed auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Down and Connor. The episcopal ordination donated him on May 15, 1983, the Bishop of Down and Connor and later Cardinal Cahal Daly ; Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland, Archbishop Gaetano Alibrandi and the Old Bishop of Down and Connor William J. Philbin .

In 1991 Walsh was named Bishop of Down and Connor. His age-related retirement request was through Pope Benedict XVI. Approved in 2008.

Walsh lives in Belfast.
