Patrik Ouředník

Patrik Ouředník (born April 23, 1957 in Prague ) is a Czech author and translator.

Life

Patrik Ouředník was born in Czechoslovakia in 1957 . In 1984 he emigrated to Paris , where he still lives today. Before his emigration, Ouředník u. a. as a bookseller, postman and warehouse worker. After emigrating to France, he completed an evening course in French literature at the Sorbonne , later he gave lectures on Czech literature at the universities of Toulouse , Rennes and Carcassonne.In 1992 he was one of the initiators of the free university Université libre de Nouallaguet , where he has been since 1995 Holds lectures. 1986 to 1998 he headed the literary column of the periodical "L'Autre Europe". From the French he translated a. a. François Rabelais , Raymond Queneau , Boris Vian , Alfred Jarry , Samuel Beckett , Henri Michaux and Claude Simon , from the Czechs Vladislav Vančura , Bohumil Hrabal , Miroslav Holub , Vladimír Holan , Jan Skácel , Ivan Wernisch and Jiří Gruša .

Ouředník is the author of numerous literary texts. His work is characterized by language experiments and curiosities, he bundles them in a wide variety of literary genres and forms. Words, events, stereotypes and much more are mixed and reworked in an absurd game of intertextuality.

Europeana. A brief history of the 20th century

Book of the year in the Czech Republic ( Lidové noviny ), bestseller in the USA ( The Village Voice ), translated into 23 languages (2010). The Europeana is a deconstruction of historical memory in which all the events, slogans, people and dates are combined in a way that must inevitably appear strange and extremely entertaining to the reader.

The Favor of the Hour, 1855

Book of the year in Italy ( La Stampa ). In 1855 a group of anarchists, communists and free spirits set out to leave Europe. It goes to Brazil, where the colony of Fraternitas is to be founded. This should stand for openness and equality. The project leads to a collapse - as does the narrative itself on a formal level.

Ad acta

In this book, Ouředník deals with an atypical detective story that takes place in post-communist Prague. The innocent and weird protagonists talk on a park bench, the plot is peppered with mysterious hints, stunted language, unsolved crimes and, last but not least, a suspicious suicide and a bizarre rape. Who, where, when, how and why?
