The organization was originally founded in 1996 as the youth organization of today's Swoboda party . One of its leaders was Andrij Parubij , who left the group in 2004. Although the organization was not considered to have a large number of members, it always had an influence on the violent Ukrainian ultra scene . In 2004 the group disbanded and was re-established in 2005. Since then, however, she has no longer had any connections with the Svoboda party.

Since then, the organization has been regarded as the paramilitary wing of the Social-National Assembly (Соціал-Національна Асамблея), with Andrij Bilezkyj as chairman . As part of the radicalization of Euromaidan , the organization was a co-founder of the paramilitary rallying movement Prawyj Sector in November 2013 . Members of the organization belong to the Azov Regiment , which was founded in April / May 2014 and is deployed in the armed fighting in eastern Ukraine .
