Paul-Marie Duval

Paul-Marie Duval (born August 6, 1912 in Paris , † January 14, 1997 in Versailles ) was a French ancient historian , provincial Roman archaeologist and Celtologist .

Life

Paul-Marie Duval, the son of surgeon Pierre Duval and his wife Marie Germaine Lafitte, studied history and geography at the École normal supérieure in Paris and, after graduating in 1934, became a member of the École française de Rome . In 1942 he took part in archaeological excavations in North Africa. He then taught history at a lyceum and was an assistant at the Sorbonne from 1944 to 1946 . In 1946 he was appointed head of the 4th section of the École pratique des hautes études , which he chaired until his retirement in 1980. From 1964 to 1982 he also held the chair of archeology and history of Gaul at the Collège de France .

Duval's research focus was the history of the Celts , to which he devoted fundamental historical and topographical studies. He led the excavations at the thermal baths in Cluny (1946–1957) and at the amphitheater of Nîmes (1961–1969).

He has received numerous awards in Germany and abroad for his scientific achievements: He was a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (from 1971) and corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute (from 1977) and the Académie royale de Belgique (from 1981) and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (from 1990), Officer of the Legion of Honor , Grand Officer of the Ordre national du Mérite , Commander of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques and Officer of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres . The National University of Ireland awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1979 .
