Paul Arendt (born October 28, 1893 in Hanover , † June 7, 1968 in Braunschweig ) was a German chief designer and technical director at Büssing . He was the inventor and designer of the forward control -Truck with underfloor diesel engine .

Life

After leaving school, Paul Arendt trained as a technical draftsman in Braunschweig. Then he made his technician and in 1915 an exam as an engineer. In 1916 he got a job at Büssing as a designer for chassis, rear axles, gearboxes and engines.

In 1927 Arendt became senior engineer and design chief for engines at Büssing. He developed the first American- style cab-over- engine buses without a hood, which Fageol also built with vertical petrol engines. Fageol has been experimenting with a central gasoline engine since 1929.

Based on this model, Arendt wanted to develop a frameless, self-supporting three-axle body in cooperation with the Hannoversche Waggonfabrik (HAWA). Such a trambus would have saved 25 percent in length compared to a conventional bus with a hood. The trambus, completed in 1929, had a standing pre-chamber diesel engine type FD 6-cylinder with 90 HP from 9.5 liters displacement , a joint development with the machine works Körting in Hanover. This engine was installed in the middle along the direction of travel on the right-hand side, and shared a subframe with the gearbox and clutch, which could be swung out to the side for maintenance work .

In 1930 Arendt wanted to place a horizontal underfloor motor under the floor of the car near Büssing, but met resistance in the company. The first Büssing forward control “tram bus” with an upright diesel engine was presented at the International Motor Show (IAA) in 1931.

Arendt developed for the company Hanomag a modern forward-control vehicle with a lying suspended underfloor diesel engine in the center of the car, of which about 90 copies as trucks of the type HL 3.5-4 , the public was presented at the IAA 1933 in Berlin and as a coach manufactured. For this he used the 55/60 hp diesel engines from the caterpillar tractor and tractor unit production. However, production had to be stopped in 1934 due to renovation measures at Hanomag.

1935 returned Arendt Bussing and became chief designer for underfloor engines for use in buses, from 1939 for trucks. In 1941 he became technical director and was in 1949 on the technical Exportmesse the Bussing underfloor Omnibus type developed by him in Hannover 5000 TU imagine .

As a thank you for his greatest professional achievement, the development of the underfloor motor, Paul Arendt was able to celebrate his 65th birthday on October 28, 1958 as director and head of construction at Büssing on Heinrich-Büssing-Strasse in Braunschweig. He died in 1968 at the age of 74.
