history
Before white colonization, the area around Waterville was inhabited by Abenaki . In 1771 Winslow was founded, which also included the village of Ticonic Village on the west bank of the Kennebec. Since there was no bridge over the river at that time, the residents of the village decided to manage their settlement as an independent municipality. On 23 June 1802, the city (was from this village town ) Waterville founded. At that time, around 800 people lived in the city.
In February 1813 the Maine Literary and Theological Institution was founded, which became Waterville College in 1821 and Colby College in 1867, which is still in existence today . At that time the city lived mainly from fishing, shipbuilding, agriculture and the timber industry. The Kennebec River is only navigable from the coast as far as here, which made Waterville an important river port. The first Baptist church opened its doors in 1818 . A bridge to Winslow was not built until 1824. From 1832 Waterville was connected to the ports of the New England coast as far as Boston with ships of the line. The first railroad to Waterville, part of the Portland – Bangor line , opened in 1849.
In the middle of the 19th century, the city developed into an industrial location, benefiting from its geographical location and the early good transport connections. In 1873 the west of the city was spun off as an independent parish West Waterville , which was later renamed Oakland. The Maine Central Railroad , which had taken over both lines through Waterville, expanded the station into an important hub, and also built their main workshop here. The previously wooden railway bridge over the Kennebec River was replaced by a new steel structure in 1874. On January 12, 1888, Waterville was finally reorganized as the City of Waterville . In the same year, the Waterville tram went into operation, initially as a horse-drawn tram, but soon as an electric tram. It operated until 1937. Thomas College was founded in 1894 and is still in existence today.
