August Paul Beckert (born December 17, 1856 in Lichtenstein / Sa. , † September 22, 1922 in Olsberg ) was a German portrait and church painter.

Life

Paul Beckert was the son of master tailor Friedrich Ernst Beckert and his wife Christiane Friederike Elisabeth Sophie, née Kluth. From 1869 to 1873 he attended the secondary school in Chemnitz. He then studied at the Dresden Art Academy with Theodor Grosse , continued studying in Berlin and Stuttgart and from February 11, 1881 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Wilhelm von Lindenschmit the Younger , Sándor Wagner and Gyula Benczúr .

During his study trips to Italy he attended the Roman Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum de Urbe , where he converted to the Catholic faith, and in 1898 and 1899 he created two paintings for the college.

Paul Beckert married Annie Leontine von Frank in 1885. After the death of his first wife, he married Elisabeth Haenlein in 1907.

On 14 June 1904 he was the Pope Pius X. Knight of the Holy Order of St. Sylvester appointed.

Paul Beckert mainly painted portraits of noble people as well as altar leaves and other church pictures. Many of his works were lost during the Second World War . Becker died during a spa stay in Olsberg.
