Paul Dubotzki
Paul Dubotzki (born October 16, 1891 in Ingolstadt , † October 13, 1969 in Dorfen ) was a German photographer , painter and businessman.
Life
Dubotzki was the son of the chief railway foreman Paul Dubotzki and his wife Auguste. After leaving school, he learned to be a photographer and worked in Lenggries and Baden-Baden . In 1912 or 1913, he joined an expedition to China and Sumatra as a photographer . In East Asia he was surprised - probably in German New Guinea - at the beginning of the First World War . He made his way to Adelaide (Australia), but was interned there in 1915 as an enemy alien . Dubotzki was interned in Torrens Island Detention Center , Holsworthy Detention Center, and Trial Bay Gaol Camp. He took numerous pictures of these internment camps . A total of around 7,000 Germans and Australians of German descent were interned there. Only after a long time did his family in Dorfen find out about his fate, until then he was considered missing.
In 1919 he returned to Dorfen, where he opened a photo shop and married Maria März. Dubotzki's parents planted an avenue of lime trees, delighted at his return. The couple had three children; his two daughters also trained as a photographer. The son died as a soldier in World War II . Later Dubotzki also worked as a painter and actor, as well as a director in amateur theaters. He died in 1969 and was buried in the municipal cemetery in Dorfen.
Exhibitions of his photographs
In response to a request from historians from Australia who researched the history of the internment camps, local historian Franz Streibl came across around 1000 photos at Dubotzki's daughter in Dorfen, some of which were in the Museum of Sydney in the exhibition The Enemy At Home between May and September 2011 : German Internees were shown in World War I Australia . In September 2012, photos of Dubotzki were shown in Dorfen, partly photographs from Australia, partly photographs from Bavaria. Many of Dubotzki's photos are of high artistic quality. The Sydney exhibition was recognized: it won the National Trust Heritage Award for 2012.
