Life

Paul Eugenius Layritz was a son of Johann Christoph Layritz . His uncle was Johann Georg Layritz . Their parents came from Bohemia as exiles .

Emulating his father, he went to high school and studied. In his dissolute student life he had doubts about the profession of preacher. Under the influence of August Gottlieb Spangenberg and Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf he found access again. He returned to Hof and stood by his father professionally until his death in 1731. Through the mediation of Johann Adam Steinmetz , he became vice principal at the Princely School in Neustadt an der Aisch . He helped the school flourish - students traveled long distances to study. Layritz was unable to realize his plan to set up a printing press to publish the classics, which his beneficiary, Governor Bergkofer, died, and which had been completed by 1740.

On December 31, 1740 he received a call from the abbot Steinmetz to the pedagogy of Bergen and in March 1741 requested his release from the Bavarian civil service. However, after the margrave had personally traveled to Neustadt, he decided that Layritz had to stay and also got him a pay raise. In May 1740 Layritz traveled to Marienborn without the knowledge of his superior Neustädter superintendent Johann Chr. Lerche and only returned after a letter from the superintendent. After repeated attempts, he got his discharge from the margravial service in November 1742.

His commitment as a pietist led to his appointment as bishop in the Moravian Church in 1775 . After the death of Nikolaus Ludwig Graf von Zinzendorf, he was in a leading position responsible for looking after the Moravian diaspora in Germany and abroad. A visitation trip took him to Labrador in Canada.
